Two weeks after I began work, I had surgery and made it to all my follow-up appointments. I don’t know why I believed that statement, we had only met a couple of times. When I called my manager to explain the situation, I expected him to retract the offer, but he never hesitated and said, “If you want to come, we will take care of you.” Despite concerns from friends and family about undergoing cancer treatment and changing jobs, I knew I could do it. I had quite a unique start at Volvo Cars, receiving an offer in 2017 but learning I had breast cancer one week before starting. ![]() I’ve been participating in such a program through the plant and have found it very uplifting and inspiring to be a part of such a powerful network. One thing I believe could improve the work environment for women is mentorship programs. If I were to give any advice to my younger self, it would be to have more confidence in myself and to self-promote. However, I never let that stop me from pursuing my goals. One final piece of advice I’d like to give to my younger self is if you do everything from the heart, then you’ll love what you do and everything else spells FUN. Having the courage to speak up if something is wrong is something that I consistently try to do. I truly believe that women can play a vital role in coaching, shaping, or helping to change the behaviours at the workplace.
